Vaginismus Treatment

Have you put up with your pain long enough?

WHAT IS IT?

Vaginismus is an involuntary contraction or spasm of the Pelvic floor muscles surrounding the vagina. In some cases, women are not aware of the muscle response. This may lead to pain during intercourse, insertion of a tampon or gynaecological examination, and make penetration difficult or impossible.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

There are two types of vaginismus. Primary vaginismus is present when the woman has never been able to have pain-free intercourse. Secondary vaginismus is present when the muscle spasms and pain started after several years of pain-free intercourse. Secondary vaginismus usually follows a traumatic event (including psychological stressors), a new medical condition, a surgery in the pelvic region, a childbirth, or hormonal changes such as those that occur during menopause.

HOW CAN PHYSIO HELP?

Your pelvic floor physio will put focus on helping you gain control of your pelvic floor muscle contractions and relaxation, and reducing muscle tightness, and habituation of your body to accepting vaginal penetration. Negative feelings towards sex and avoidance of sexual intercourse or intimacy is common in women with vaginismus and contributes to the problem. Dealing with emotional triggers is therefore another essential component of the treatment and your physiotherapist will often suggest you consult a psychologist or sexologist in parallel.
