HOW CAN PHYSIO HELP?
WHAT IS URINARY URGENCY?
Urinary urgency is when you feel a strong need to urinate that can lead to leakage. Common situations where it can happen are: when you arrive home; when you put the key in the door; when you hear running water; when you’re looking for a bathroom; but can also happen anywhere. The feeling of urgency can lead you to go to the bathroom more often ‘just in case,’ before your bladder is truly full, which can actually perpetuate the problem.
WHAT CAUSES IT?
There are many factors contributing to the development of urinary urgency, and they do not have to be independent of one another:
  1. You urinate often ‘just in case,’ training your bladder to only be able to tolerate smaller volumes of urine.
  2. The inner lining of your bladder becomes irritated due to factors such as:
  • Inadequate water intake
  • Spicy foods
  • Caffeinated foods or beverages
  • Alcohol
  • Certain medications
  • Urinary tract infection
  • And many more!
   3.  Pelvic floor muscle dysfunction
   4.  Overactive bladder
HOW CAN PHYSIO HELP?
As pelvic floor physiotherapists, our role is to determine what particular situation(s) is responsible for your urinary urgency. Typically, a balance of specific exercises, manual techniques, and bladder retraining will be employed to help you reach your personal goals and help you regain control of your bladder!
