EVALUATION AND TREATMENTS
WHAT IS IT?
Perineal and pelvic rehabilitation is a physiotherapy approach that is focused on treating problems with urinary and reproductive system functions in men and women. The pelvic floor muscles play a crucial role in urine, stool and flatulence continence. They help support the pelvic organs and, moreover, contribute to sexual function and lumbar stability. When these muscles are weak, too tight or lack coordination, several urinary symptoms and/or pains in the pelvic region may occur. Perineal and pelvic rehabilitation therefore aims to normalise bladder and bowel function, improve the pelvic floor muscles’ ability to contract and relax, and decrease pain and discomfort. These problems are treated through an exercise-based approach, in order to allow you to return to your everyday activities.
WHAT CAN BE TREATED?
The problems and symptoms that can be successfully treated with perineal and pelvic rehabilitation in our Verdun (Montreal) clinic include:
  • Fecal complaints
  • Pain in the Pelvic Region
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse (pelvic organ descent)
  • Post operative treatment (pelvic or abdominal)
  • Prenatal Care
  • Postpartum Care
  • Sexual Complaints
  • Urinary Complaints
EVALUATION AND TREATMENTS

Evaluation

The evaluation in perineal and pelvic rehabilitation starts with a detailed interview including your past medical, gynaecological and obstetrical history. Specific information regarding the problems and symptoms you are experiencing and the effect that they have on your life will be gathered, and your treatment goals will be discussed.

The evaluation continues with a physical exam that will look at the different factors that can be involved in your pelvi-perineal problems. The evaluation may include observation of lumbar spine, pelvis and hip mobility, an external abdominal and perineal exam and an internal perineal exam.

All of this information will be used to fully understand your condition and guide the treatment of your problem.

Treatment

The results of your evaluation are going to determine the best possible individualised treatment of your problem.  Treatment may involve biofeedback and/or electrostimulation sessions, as well as specific exercises that should be performed a few times a day at home. These will help improve the function of your perineal (pelvic floor) muscles  and gradually decrease your symptoms. The exercises will be modified regularly in order to continue to progress towards your goals.

Treatment sessions usually start at once a week, and are later spaced out as you improve.
