WHAT IS IT?
Miscarriage or spontaneous abortion or pregnancy loss is when an embryo or fetus weighing less than 500 grams dies during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is a common reality; it is estimated that between 15-20% of pregnancies under 12 weeks end in miscarriage.
When a miscarriage occurs, there is often bleeding and cramping. These are signs that the pregnancy has terminated because the embryo has stopped developing and your body is in the process of expelling the unviable embryo and tissues. There are times, however, when the embryo stops developing without your body notifying you through various symptoms and you may learn about it during a routine ultrasound.
Bleeding is not mandatory during a miscarriage. Indeed, blood loss in the 1st trimester of pregnancy remains possible for many women. If you experience bleeding and you are concerned, contact your healthcare professional.
There are many causes of a miscarriage and often it is impossible to know why it has occurred. It is important to know that 50-60% of cases occurring during the 1st trimester are due to chromosomal or genetic abnormalities of the baby.

WHAT ARE ITS IMPACTS?
When a miscarriage occurs, some people may experience one or more emotions, such as relief, disappointment, joy, sorrow, a feeling of emptiness, guilt and/or responsibility for the termination of the pregnancy. Several factors can influence each individual's reaction, including the context of the pregnancy and the relationship between the people involved. All emotional reactions are legitimate.
Some people experience a great sense of loss and go through a period of mourning as a result of the miscarriage. Perinatal bereavement is not a loss like any other because it is not memories that remain, but a future that is stolen from parents. If you are experiencing perinatal bereavement, it is important to take the time to address it in order to avoid complications of unresolved grief.
As perinatal bereavement is a taboo subject in our society, it is common for parents not to find an attentive ear in their circle of friends or family. Despite good intentions, loved ones can trivialize or downplay what people who have lost their babies are going through. When such a situation arises, it is important to turn to professionals who need to help you address and resolve your grief.
