The McKenzie Method, which is also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), is a very well researched physiotherapy approach with hundreds of articles investigating it. It was developed in New Zealand by Robin McKenzie in the 1950 and 60s and is overseen by the McKenzie Institute International and its national branch, The Robin McKenzie Institute Canada.
The McKenzie Method/MDT Assessment Process uses logical "cause-and-effect" relationships between positions and movements with their effects on your symptoms. It considers your body mechanically, meaning that it analyses different movements and limitations and works to find the most efficient method of restoring full function. In the process, key concepts are demonstrated that will help you understand your problem. The mechanical components of your problem are analyzed, and your condition is classified into a specific syndrome.

Once the syndrome has been identified, your McKenzie Method/MDT physiotherapist will determine your individualized treatment plan. The McKenzie Method/MDT treatment that is chosen is supported by scientific studies showing that patients with these specific syndromes respond well with their corresponding treatments. McKenzie Method/MDT treatment is focused on education, uses simple but surprisingly effective exercises, and hands-on techniques as indicated.
The McKenzie Method/MDT works very well for treating a variety of orthopedic/musculoskeletal problems, from back pain and neck pain to problems in all other areas of the body (shoulders, knees, etc).
