Lymph is a colourless liquid that circulates in the lymphatic vessels, that are throughout your body, through the pumping action of your muscles. Lymph is important for nutrition; it is an important part of the immune system and it helps remove toxins from your body.
As a cleansing system, it drains excess liquids, toxins and cellular debris that have accumulated in your body. The lymph nodes are interspersed throughout the lymph vessels and are especially prevalent around the groin, armpits and on both sides of your neck. These lymph nodes help filter the lymph and remove toxins and debris from the circulatory system.
When lymph circulation is inadequate, the body can weaken and toxins can accumulate, which can play a role in a variety of health problems.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a massage technique that is characterised by soft and precise movements with light rhythmic pressure. This is achieved with the fingers and palms of your therapists hands throughout your body while following the direction of lymphatic circulation - from the extremities towards the heart (in the characteristic manner of the Leduc method).
The goal is to drain the excess liquid that is present in your tissues, to improve your circulation and detoxify your body, while reinforcing the immune system.

Benefits include:
- Progressive resorption of swelling (edema) by decreasing fluid retention and decongesting your tissues
- Slowly activate and improve the natural lymphatic circulation
- Accelerate the healing process while improving immune response and increasing cellular metabolism and the nutrition of your tissues
- Decreased pain and a deep relaxation as a result of the pleasant and repetitive movements involved
WHAT CAN BE TREATED?
- Edema (swelling): heavy legs, cellulite
- Post-operative or post-traumatic swelling: An enlarged arm (after a mastectomy), fracture, sprain, hematoma, ecchymosis (bruising)
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
The massage is performed without oil, directly on the skin, at a consistent rhythm. You will be partially undressed and covered with a towel. Your therapist will uncover the part of your body that they will be treating and they will then perform a series of light, slow movements (similar to a wave) which will create the pumping action. The sensation is relaxing. The massage does not work the muscles and the pressure is light.
The massage will start with some stimulation of the lymph nodes of the neck, armpits or the abdomen and groin, depending on the region being treated. After that the pressures will be applied to the region to be treated (the head, trunk, arms, or legs). The sessions normally last between 30 and 60 minutes.
