WHAT IS IT?
Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes sudden muscle weakness on one side of the face, which causes the affected side of the face to droop. This may result in smiles appearing lop-sided and you may be unable to close the eye on the affected side. In most cases, the weakness is temporary and improves over weeks, with a complete recovery usually taking approximately 6 months.
If you experience symptoms of Bell’s Palsy, it is important to consult a doctor to rule out a stroke as the cause of your symptoms since the two conditions may present similarly. |

HOW CAN PHYSIO HELP?
Although the weakness of the face muscles can improve on its own, some individuals can be left with residual weakness. The physiotherapists at Active Solution Physiotherapy will ask you in depth questions in order to understand your problem, followed by a physical examination consisting of looking at how the muscles of your face move. After determining which movements are the most affected, an individualized treatment plan will be designed, explained and implemented. This will consist of a home exercise program to help retrain the face muscles and, possibly, the use of electrical stimulation of the facial muscles to help elicit muscle contraction.
